Inside The Huddle: First Home Game

The Bentley Falcons opened the 2009 football season with a 14-13 comeback win over Ohio Dominican.

After an exciting opening game against Ohio Dominican, the Bentley University football squad is 1-0.  In the second half our team came together and scored two touchdowns to come from behind and win the game.

Not too long after we got back from the airport we were practicing hard for our next game against Curry College.  Curry is a DIII team, but don’t let that fool you.  They are a very well coached team and love to fly around the field. They advance to the playoffs almost every year.

One of the hardest things for a college athlete to do is to juggle academics and athletics.  In a normal in-season week we have lifting twice a week, film every day, and practice every day.  The athletics side takes up about 5 to 6 hours of an athlete’s day.

Here at Bentley to be eligible an athlete has to be enrolled in 12 credits or 4 classes, but to graduate on time an athlete must take 16 credits or five classes.  Each class is an hour and fifteen minutes and meets twice a week.

Between classes, meetings, projects, and practices an athlete only has a few hours to get homework done and relax before hitting the hay.  This is where time management becomes a huge part of an athlete’s life.

This Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. we host Curry College here at the Bentley football field.

Bryan Mroczka is a senior offensive lineman for the Bentley University Falcons. Each week during the 2009 season, Bryan will give a preview of the next game for the Falcons and also chronicle some of the things a student athlete deals with on a regular basis.

      Dwight "Dewey" Evans

We honor Dwight Evans as the Boston Sports Then and Now Athlete of the Month. With the opening of the baseball season around the corner, the choice of “Dewey” Evans is fitting. He was a player who gave his all, all the time to the Boston Red Sox where he played from 1972 to 1990. He is one of the best players not in the Baseball Hall Of Fame.

Dwight Michael Evans made an immediate impact in his professional baseball career by winning the International League’s MVP in 1972. With AAA Louisville, Evans had 17 hrs, 95 RBI and hit .300.

Dewey was called up to the tail end of the ’72 season. On September 16th, he pinch ran and was 0-1 at the plate. He played 18 games and decent numbers during his call up. In 57 plate appearances, Evans had 1 hr, 6 RBI and batted .263.

Dwight Evans called right field in Fenway Park his home. He was a defensive standout and offensively could hold his own.
