Patriots DASHING Duo Breaks Collins-Van Eeghen’s Tandem Team Rushing Record
The Patriots running game had a day for the history books against Buffalo during their 52-28 rout.
New England rushed for 247 yards as a team which is good for FIFTH in team history. The 1976 squad had an eye popping 332 yards on the ground versus the Broncos on 11-28-1976 to rank first all-time. In that game, Dan Calhoun led the way with 177 yards on 25 carries.
Stevan Ridley (106 yds on 22 carries & 2 td’s) and rookie free agent Brandon Bolden (136 yds on 16 carries & 1 td) etched their own names in the franchise record books. This talented tandem became the first duo since Tony Collins (103 yds on 32 carries) and Cambridge native Mark van Eeghen (100 yds on 12 carries) to break the century mark in a game.
During a game versus Seattle on 12/19/82, Collins and van Eeghen led the way as the Patriots rushed for 249 yards. New England won the game 16-0 during the nine game strike shortened season.
What is so IMPRESSIVE about Bolden and Ridley’s performance is their yards per carry. Bolden had an INCREDIBLE 8.6 yards per carry while Ridley had a very respectable 4.8 yards per rush. New England’s POWER running game made the DIFFERENCE from the Patriots being 1-3 or 2-2.
The Patriots also tied the team record for most rushing touchdowns (4) in a game just for good measure. This is the SEVENTH time this has happened with the most recent time occurring on 10-16-83 versus the San Diego Chargers.Tony Collins, Steve Grogan & van Eeghen all found the end zone that day.
If Josh McDaniels knows what’s good for him, he should continue to feed these young HORSES the rock.
Because they are DIFFERENCE makers.
