Patriots Time Capsule: Bledsoe Vs. Marino ’94 SHOOTOUT (VIDEO)
If there was such a thing as a “GOOD LOSS” this was it for the upstart New England Patriots in 1994.
Second year Patriots signal caller, Drew Bledsoe, led his team to Miami to face future hall of famer Dan Marino and the Dolphins in the season opener. This would be Marino’s first game back after a season ending Achilles injury.
Very few gave New England a chance to win in this game. The Patriots were coming off a 5-11 campaign in ’93 and the Dolphins finished at 9-7. Plus the Pats have historically preformed poorly in Miami.
Vegas plugged in the Dolphins as a 5 point favorite. Luckily for the Patriots, Drew Bledsoe was not a betting man.
dust mud settled, New England covered the spread but still fell short in this EPIC quarterback duel, falling 39-35.
The stats guys must have had carpal tunnels trying to tally up this aerial assault.
The former number one overall pick, Drew Bledsoe made Dan Marino work for the victory. The sensational sophomore’s stat line read, 32 for 51, 421 yards, four touchdown and two picks. He led the Patriots to a 14-10 halftime lead but unfortunately the defense could not cage #13 for Miami.
Dan Marino outdueled his young AFC counterpart. His stat line was even more JAW DROPPING. The former University of Pittsburgh product piled up 473 yards on 23 completions with five TD’s and one interception as he led his team back from a late 35-32 deficit.
If you love offense, this wild, wild AFC East shootout has to come to mind. And it did for many as it ranked #8 overall on the NFL Network’s Top 10 Quarterback Duels.
