Sources: Sox Acquire Peavy, Send Iglesias To Tigers In Three-Team Trade
Just before 11:00 and less than two hours after they beat the Mariners to remain half a game behind the red-hot Rays in the AL East, the Red Sox dealt one of their most promising young players for an established Major League starter. Rumored to be on the move during the days and weeks leading up to the trade deadline, the White Sox have agreed in principle to trade one-time 19-game winner, Jake Peavy, (128-97 career record) to the Red Sox in a three-team trade also involving the Detroit Tigers.
Boston will send 23-year-old infielder, Jose Iglesias, (.330 in 63 games played this season) to the Tigers and Detroit will send outfielder Avisail Garcia to their division rivals in Chicago. Before the deal becomes official, a medical review will take place, according to ESPN and the deal may be announced Wednesday.
Also, Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com tweeted about 35 minutes ago that the Sox will be shipping out at least one other player in the deal, while Nick Cafardo tweeted that Detroit right hander, Brayan Villarreal, may be in the mix as well.
Peavy, who won the NL Cy Young award in 2007 as a member of the Padres, has a record of 8-4 this season in 13 starts for the White Sox, who are in last place and 19.5 games out in the AL Central. He will be owed $14.5 million next season and has a player option for 2015 if he meets an innings pitched requirement, according to Brendan Fitzgerald of Fox 25.
Iglesias, whose name has been trending worldwide for much of the last half hour, was taken out of Tuesday night’s game after the eighth inning and reportedly left the clubhouse shortly after it ended. McAdam also indicated on Twitter that the Sox will be receiving one other prospect in the deal and will also be sending away three lower level prospects – two pitchers and a position player. None of the three are on the 40-man roster.
With third base now vacant, the Sox have a decision to make in the near future. They could bring Will Middlebrooks back into his old spot, promote 20-year-old, Xander Bogaerts from Pawtucket, or go in an entirely different direction. I hear Michael Young may be available.
11:37 pm: Gordon Edes confirmed Villareal is indeed heading to Boston.
11:56 pm: The Red Sox confirmed the deal via Twitter. The three prospects involved are infielder Cleulius Rondon (Lowell) and pitchers J.B. Wendelken (Greenville) and Frank Montas (Greenville).
12:15 am: Ben Cherington spoke to the media regarding the trade. Some of his remarks included him expressing his excitement for acquiring a “proven Major League starter” and that the Peavy deal came together “quickly.”
“[It was the] deal that made the most sense of starting pitchers available,” he added. Cherington also said that he is not sure when Peavy’s first start will be, but that it will not be Wednesday.
