Top 10 Man Tears Moments in Boston Sports 5-1 1

Posted on April 07, 2010 by Joe Gill

Man Tears \man teers\

-noun

  1. The effect on human males during times of ultimate jubilation or extreme devastation. Usually associated with Boston Sports teams (i.e. Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox).

Here is part Deux of the Man Tears Countdown.

I hope you have your Man Kleenex ready because this going to be rough on the tear ducts.

I am Man Tearing up just thinking about it.

My Man Tears were shed in Seattle as the Sox beat the Yankees.

5. Red Sox Come Back To Beat Yankees In The ALCS (2004)

I didn’t shed any Man Tears when the Red Sox were down three games to none. This is expected to happen. The Sox are supposed to break our hearts and leave us dry of Man Eye Moisture.

This is what they do.

Just like the 2003 ALCS, they push the series to seven games just so Aaron “Bleepin” Boone could break our wills and dreams with one swing of his bat.

So I was mentally prepared for another let down, but I guess the Sox didn’t read that same old script.

Down in the ninth in Game Four against the best closer in baseball, the Sox tie it.

Then David Ortiz wins it in extras and does it again the next night.

Then Curt Schilling and his Bloody Sock dispatch the Yankees in Game Six.

One problem, I am going to be on a plane to Seattle for Game Seven!  Damn the Baseball gods!

After surviving certain death over the Rockies, I broke out my radio to try to catch any signal and get a score (hope the FAA is not reading this). Nothing!!

The pilot finally came on the speaker and said Sox up 8-1 in the sixth. The plane exploded in the good way, in cheers!

They better hold on until I land!

Before the rubber hit the landing strip, I called my mom and got an update.

Mom says “Sox are up 10-3 in the ninth with the Yankees up!”

I say, “Oh my god! Who is up?”

She says, “The skinny guy.”

I respond, “Can you be more specific please?”

“Ruben Sierra and he just grounded out! The Red Sox are going to the World Series!”

The whole plane was going out of their minds. My friends were blowing up my phone calling me from the mob scene in Copley Place.

I found a Yankees fan in the terminal in Seattle and said these immortal Man Tears words….

“We finally (expletive) got you!”

Boston Sports Then and Now’s Top Ten Moments Of The Decade 2

Posted on December 27, 2009 by Joe Gill

There was alot to cheer about in Boston over the last 10 years.

The most memorable decade in Boston sports history is drawing to a close and oh what a decade it was!

Six Championships.

Six Victory Parades.

Historic Records.

Blockbuster trades.

The last ten years washed away the 86 year curse of the Red Sox, saw the Patriots win three Lombardi trophies and the Celtics raise banner #17.  Now we are just waiting for the Bruins to join the championship party.

Let’s relive and revel in the top 10 sports moments in Boston, “The City of Champions”.

#10: The Boston Bruins finally win a playoff series.

Yes it may not be a championship, but when you finally win a playoff series after 10 seasons, it’s a big deal.

The Bruins swept the hated Montreal Canadiens in the 2008-2009 NHL playoffs. This was the team’s first playoff series victory since they defeated Carolina in 1999.

Boston would go on to lose to the former “Whale” four games to three in the second round of the playoffs.

RIP 10/27/04: Death Of The Curse 5

Five years ago today, the Red Sox finally "Reversed the Curse".

Five years ago today, the Red Sox finally "Reversed the Curse".

October 27th marks the fifth anniversary of the Red Sox reversing the 86 year curse. Damn five years went by quickly (I hate getting old!), but I remember that night like it was yesterday. It was a crisp clear autumn night with a full moon. I was meeting all my friends at the Grand Canal in Boston to witness arguably the most exciting, incredible, and unbelievable moment in Boston Sports History.

The Red Sox were on the cusp of finally Reversing that f@$#@*& curse!

However, let’s step back and rewind back to the ALCS versus the hated Yankees.  After dispatching the LA California Angels of Anaheim at Disney in the Divisional Series, the Sox sputtered and were left for dead after a 19-8 thrashing at home. They were in a three games to none hole. Everyone in Red Sox Nation began to focus on the Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics (If you really thought they were coming back from down 3-0, you are a liar or a psychic).

Baseball season in Boston was over.

Or was it?

    • Steve Grogan
      August 18, 2010 | 7:27 pm

      Steve Grogan

We honor Steve Grogan as the Boston Sports Then and Now Athlete of the Month. The former Patriots quarterback left it all on the field during his 16 year career. Grogan was playing the “Patriots Way” before Bill Belichick introduced it in 2000.  He led by example and his teammates were always behind him.

Steve Grogan was drafted by Patriots coach Chuck Fairbanks in the fifth round of the 1975 draft out of Kansas State. He was one of the school’s all time passing and total offense leaders. Grogan not only beat you with his arm but he was exceptionally quick for a man standing at 6’4”.

The Patriots already had their franchise quarterback in place when he was drafted. Former Heisman Trophy winner, Jim Plunkett had been the Patriots starter for his first four years in the league. However, Coach Fairbanks was not afraid to make a move if a player was under-performing.  It didn’t matter who he was.

Midway through the 1975 season, Grogan was given the reigns of the Patriots offense.  He started the last seven games with only one victory to his credit. As a rookie, Grogan posted respectable numbers with 1976 yards with 11 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

He also added 110 yards on the ground with three rushing scores.

This would just be a sneak preview for things to come from the lanky quarterback out of K-State.

    • BST&N Book Review: Wicked Good Year
      June 29, 2010 | 6:58 pm

This is a wicked good read.

I review Steve Buckley’s Wicked Good Year.

A great read about the incredible Boston sports year of 2007.

The Red Sox and the Celtics took home championships. The Patriots were 3 minutes from a perfect season and the Bruins were the Bruins.

Sit back and enjoy my video review.

This book is wicked good and wicked pissah too!
