There is no better palce to watch baseball than at Fenway Park.

There is no better palce to watch baseball than at Fenway Park.

Imagine getting to enjoy a hot dog and beer at Fenway Park and being able to call it “research!” That is just the kind of hardship that Christopher Klein had to endure while writing his book, The Die-Hard Sports Fan’s Guide to Boston.

Klein’s research was actually 25 years in the making as he moved to Boston as a sixth grader and quickly developed into a die-hard fan of Boston sports.

In looking for a Boston treasure to focus on as the sequel to his first book, Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands, Klein recognized that while much has been written about the great sports traditions in Boston, there was still a need for a comprehensive guide that not only shared some of the magical stories of Boston’s sports tradition, but that also gave fans insight into how to best enjoy a sporting event in the city and surrounding area.

Thus, The Die Hard Sports Fan’s Guide to Boston was born.

“The book is really part history and part visitor’s guide,” Klein said. “It is often hard for sports fans to find an abundance of information in a typical guide book.

She is warming up Boston Sports Fans!

Every Boston sports fan has a wish list of the games he or she wants to witness at least once in a lifetime. Of course, every die-hard fan would want to be in the stands when the Patriots win the Super Bowl or a Red Sox pitcher hurls a no-hitter. But those unscripted moments and unpredictable results that make sports so great—and sometimes so frustrating—also mean there’s no certainty they will ever happen again.

So, sticking to just those dates written in stone on the region’s sporting calendar, here’s my subjective list of ten events that all die-hard Boston sports fans should experience firsthand at least once. This bucket list includes a mix of events that are quintessentially Boston, the hottest tickets in town, and combustible rivalries steeped in history.

Cup of Joe: Boston’s Black Sunday 0

Posted on October 13, 2009 by Joe Gill

Cup-of-Joe8-300x290Black Sunday has come and gone.

What is Black Sunday you ask?

Gary Tanguay of Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight and 985 the Sports Hub dubbed this day.

Black Sunday is October 11th, 2009.

This is the day that the Boston Red Sox season came to a crashing halt as Jonathan Papelbon blew a 6-4 lead in the ninth against the Angels.

The Sox got swept by the upstart Angels of Los Angeles-Anaheim-Disney Land in the ALDS.

No Red Sox-Yankees ALCS as we all wished. This teaches you that you just can’t look too far ahead.

Red Sox Nation was licking their wounds before the Patriots and Broncos even kicked off.

Could the Pats save Boston Sports from the chasm of sports depression and letdown?

Celtics Media Day: Big Three United Once Again 0

Posted on September 29, 2009 by Nick Gelso
Garnett is almost 100% and happy to be back!

The Big Ticket is back.

The media was back in Waltham. The players were in uniform, smiles on faces. They looked loose and excited to start their bid to reclaim championship glory.

At 4 pm the Celtics were scheduled to hop on a bus and head to Newport, R.I. for the start of training camp tomorrow.

So many questions were needing be answered. Lets highlight a few big subjects (in order) addressed today…

#1  -  KG’s Health

The greatest part about watching coverage of the Celtics Media Day was seeing KG, back in uniform, with a smile on his face and talking about his injury/recovery. Finally! Some comments from the man himself to put me at ease a bit.

First things first, Garnett admitted that the injury was more severe then initially thought. He told the media,

“No surprises, other then the severity of the injury”, Garnett told media. “I didn’t know it was that bad”.

Garnett was then asked to elaborate on his comment.

Video Tailgate Confessional: Pats Versus Falcons 0

Posted on September 29, 2009 by Joe Gill

My girlfriend and I braved a wet and damp Gillette Stadium this past weekend for the game versus the Falcons.  Some Walmart rain gear, a tarp, beer, curry chicken, and Filipino pork made for a grand tailgate experience.

Section 336 was rocking but missing members of the Tailgate Tribe in row 17! Wish you were there to root on the Pats to their 26-10 victory!

Next Game 10/18 versus the Titans.

Check in for the next Video Tailgate Confessional!

Vintage Athlete of the Month: Bill Russell

We honor Bill Russell as the Boston Sports Then and Now Athlete of the Month. In the dictionary next to the definition of champion, there should be a picture of Bill Russell.

Before he even entered the NBA, Russell experienced his share of collegiate basketball glory while playing for San Francisco State.  Russell was the defensive core of a team that won 55 games in a row.

Russell was a shot blocking machine during his college career. After batting away 13 shots against the NCAA basketball powerhouse UCLA, legendary coach John Wooden said of Russell, “He is the greatest defensive man I’ve ever seen.”

And defense does indeed win championships in basketball, as SF State won back to back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956.

Due to his stellar collegiate career, Bill Russell was an easy choice for captain of the US Olympic Men’s Basketball team in 1956. His winning ways continued on the world’s biggest stage. The United States squad would go on to defeat the USSR, 89-55 to capture the gold medal.

Before the age of 22, Bill Russell experienced championship glory three times.

And he was far from done.

The 6’9” center was a top prospect in the 1956 draft. The only question was which NBA franchise would choose this natural born winner.

    • BST&N Book Review: Wicked Good Year
      June 29, 2010 | 6:58 pm

This is a wicked good read.

I review Steve Buckley’s Wicked Good Year.

A great read about the incredible Boston sports year of 2007.

The Red Sox and the Celtics took home championships. The Patriots were 3 minutes from a perfect season and the Bruins were the Bruins.

Sit back and enjoy my video review.

This book is wicked good and wicked pissah too!
